A 2.0 M methanol feed and operating temperatures between 40°C and 70°C were used. The effect methanol concentration slightly drops the fuel cell maximum power density possibly due to the increase of methanol crossover. This indicates that the maximum power density of direct methanol fuel cell at 1.0 M (50 mW/cm2) is higher than 2.0 M due to the less mixed potential taking place when more methanol crosses the membrane without being oxidized at the anode. The fuel cell behaviour can have a better explanation when testing the methanol crossover by using the linear sweep voltammetry technique in the next chapter. However, in terms of power density, the fuel cell showed less power density at higher methanol concentration in this test. In addition, the fuel cell using standard MEA was tested at 4.0 M concentration. The following figure shows the DMFC performance in terms of power densities at 4.0 M methanol concentration as anode feed and through a temperature range from 40°C to 70°C.
