The maximum power density among the five MEAs tested was 78.2 mW/cm2 at 1.0 wt% GO and the minimum was 23 mW/cm2 at 5 wt% GO. It can be seen from the figure that the power density starts to improve while increasing the GO wt% loading until reaching 1.0 wt% GO, here power density starts to decrease as wt% GO continues to increase. In the case of methanol crossover, the current densities (crossover) starts at its highest value (86 mA/cm2) for the standard MEA then decreases linearly until reaching 5 wt% GO (56 mA/cm2), proton conductivities from 0 wt% to 5 wt% follows the same linear pattern. If the proton conductivities of the GO MEAs were higher than standard MEA, then it can be assumed that proton conductivity contributed in improving the power density at 1.0 wt% GO MEA. Since this was not the case, then it can be concluded that the power density improvement at 1.0 wt%GO was due to the reduction methanol crossover. As a summary of this study, the optimum power density is achieved at a balance between methanol crossover and proton conductivity, meaning the ideal weight percent of GO loading was 1.0 wt%.
