Conclusion and future work In summary, inorganic materials do not have good proton conductivity relative to Nafion. Therefore, mixing inorganic filler with Nafion membrane affects the proton conductivity of the fuel cell. It was found, from this work, that modifying the binding layer with an inorganic material (mordenite or graphene oxide) and placing it at the barrier before the Nafion membrane (anode electrode) can significantly reduce methanol permeability without adversely affecting the proton conductivity if the concentration of the inorganic is kept low and optimised for the system. Also, if the fuel cell is limited by proton conductivity, then reducing the methanol crossover can increase the fuel cell power density. The fuel cell power density is extremely sensitive to proton conductivity and methanol permeability, reducing methanol permeability can reduce the methanol crossover but drops the fuel cell performance drastically due to the lower proton conductivity if too much inorganic filler is used. The best power density of the fuel cell can be reached at conditions where the DMFC is equally limited by membrane ohmic resistance and methanol permeability as demonstrated by the model put together by Li et al [148]. Most common errors in this work result from differences of catalyst loading for each electrode where it affect the methanol oxidation at the anode and oxygen reduction at the cathode hence, affect the power density of DMFC. Other errors in this work are usually quite small in the range of low and intermediate cell current densities. DMFC uses liquid fuel directly to produce electricity which brings several advantages compared to hydrogen fuel cell in terms of fuel stored and handling. DMFC is suitable for mobile applications and considers as low temperature fuel cells which do not requires a cooling system during the operation hence, lower operational cost. However, the maximum power density of DMFC is relatively lower than high temperature fuel cells. On the other hand, the long term durability of the DMFC remains a quite challenge due to the electrochemical potentials induced by the cell reactions which cause a degradation of components in either anode (via methanol oxidation) or the cathode (via oxygen reduction). Liu et al [179] found that 30% of the original maximum power density of a DMFC was lost after a 75 h life test.
