Synthetic electrofuels or efuels are gaseous and liquid fuels produced from hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide using sustainable electricity as the principal power source23,24. They are also known as power-to-gas/liquids/ fuels (PtX) or synthetic fuels25. Figure 5 gives a schematic showing the production of efuels. The principal advantages of efuels are that they have a relatively high energy density, they use the existing energy infrastructure and are compatible with existing internal combustion engines, albeit with slight modifications.
