Alcohol crossover is the permeation of alcohol from cathode to anode through membrane. Chemical energy of the alcohol will render useless when transported this way, lowering the efficiency of fuel utilization. Moreover, alcohol may oxidize to carbon monoxide in the cathode side and poison Pt catalyst used as it cannot fully oxidize methanol into carbon dioxide as Pt-Ru catalyst in the anode do. Because of this hurdle, increasing the alcohol feed concentration which could potentially increase alcohol oxidation kinetics is limited 27. Besides its high alcohol crossover, Nafion is also costly compared to other polymers. Some authors have using other polymers such as chitosan and PVA for DAFC application for DAFC application. Zeolite is widely chosen as polymer filler to reduce alcohol crossover. However, addition of zeolite into polymer matrix reduces its overall proton conductivity. In order to obtain low alcohol crossover and conductivity reduction, zeolite type used and preparation method are optimized. Polymer-inorganic filler composite membranes mainly have been prepared via two methods: (i) mixing polymer solutions with inorganic fillers or their precursors followed by casting and (ii) infiltration of polymer membranes with precursors of inorganic fillers.82 Among those two, the blending-casting method is the most frequently used method.
