This plant, the Puna Geothermal Venture, has a generating capacity of 38 MW. Additionally, the state of Hawaii has set ambitious goals to increase the generation of electricity from renewable resources, including geothermal energy.7 In 2012, Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) announced its intentions to seek Geothermal Requests for Proposals for up to 50 MW of additional geothermal energy supply. Three additional projects are currently being developed on Maui and the Big Island by Ormat Technologies. Further, the state has demonstrated its seriousness about geothermal with its release of Hawaii Geothermal Assessment and Roadmap compiled by Pacific International Center For High Technology Research (PICHTR ) in January 2013.
