It has recently attracted more interest due to environmental concerns and possible future shortages of fossil oils. In addition to the production of heat and power, thermochemical treatment of biomass yields gases and oils which may be considered as a starting point for the production of chemicals and fuels from purified syngas. In the HighBio2 project, research activities at Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius have mainly focused on the implementation of work package 3, that is, the use of purified syngas in the development of Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. This paper considers some aspects of the preparation of FT catalysts and the need for proper characterization of the catalysts.
