NREL CA Solar Benefits Environmental and Hedging Benefits The California Energy Commission (CEC) has passed a moratorium on the construction of coal fueled power generation in the state and the import of power produced by coal fueled plants. By removing coal as a possible fuel for new power generation, natural gas fueled or renewable energy will be required to meet the growing demand for power in the state. 7.2.3 Natural Gas Prices and Price Volatility Natural gas is actively traded on commodities markets throughout the world, such as the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) or the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). The fuel is bought and sold for immediate delivery, the “spot market,” and options on future delivery (“futures contracts”) are traded. Long-term price trends are typically caused by factors that affect supply and demand, such as economic activity and changes to natural gas production and storage. Figure 7-4 shows an upward long-term trend of natural gas prices in California. The figure also shows the impact of short-term phenomena on natural gas prices. The chart also shows the short-term effect of supply/demand shock during the California energy crisis in 2000 and 2001.
