These ‘good- housekeeping’ options include: • Insulation of hot surfaces: Many boilers, heat exchangers, valves and pipes are not properly insulated or insulation is damaged or removed during maintenance; • Repair of steam leakages and steam traps: In industry, many steam traps are leaking, resulting in the loss of energy. This can be avoided by regular maintenance; • Process control strategies: With modern process control systems, continuity of processes can improve, generally resulting in higher efficiencies; • Boiler efficiency improvements: A number of measures can be taken to improve the efficiency of boilers, including cleaning of the pipes, minimization of boiler blow down and insulation of the generator.
