Figure 16 - Carnot and trilateral efficiency. A comparison of the two cycles can be made to confirm that the trilateral cycle is less efficient than the Carnot cycle. Figure 16 depicts this. The heat sink is at a temperature of 25°C (77°F) and the heat source temperature ranges from 100-300°C (212- 572°F). Since the trilateral cycle does not have the same steps as the Carnot cycle, it will have a lower efficiency. For example, with a heat sink at a temperature of 25°C (77°F) and a heat source of 200°C (392°F) the Carnot efficiency is 40.1% while the trilateral efficiency is 25.1%. 3.4 Thermal and Exergetic Efficiency When discussing efficiency it is common for many to think of thermal efficiency based on the first law of thermodynamics. In its most basic definition thermal efficiency is the ratio of what is put into a system to what is produced from the system. In binary power plants, heat energy is put in and electrical power is produced.
