The inter-layer approach has been used for Si thicknesses up to 100 μm with successful retention of baseline strength. Figure 4.2.5b shows a typical microstructure of the bond coat system. A well adhered gas tight top layer is expected to provide the steam protection required in the gas turbine environment. Weibull analysis and fractographic investigation were performed to understand the nature and distribution of strength controlling defects, and verify the effectiveness of the interlayer. The Weibull plot of the cumulative probability of failure for as received silicon nitride and silicon nitride samples coated with the new bond layer system (Si and interlayer) is shown in Figure 4.2.6. The Weibull distribution is given as σm Pf =1−exp−σ where Pf is cumulative probability of failure, σ is the order parameter or strength at which probability of failure is to be determined, σc is the scaling parameter of the distribution and also known as characteristic strength, m is the shape parameter of the distribution and is also known as the Weibull Modulus.
