Introduction INTRODUCTION 1 One of the main problems facing the developnent of geothermal energy resources is the quality of the fluid at the wellhead. Only a few of the developcd geothermal fields, including the geysers in Northern California, have dry stean suitable for direct use in conventional steam turbinesLl1. A t these unique sites the only treatment required before the steam is directed to the turbines is the removal particulates. At other locations, the resource a t the wellhead is destructive to and requires sone sort of system to transfer the energy to another mediun. of solid debris and low quality of the bladed steaa turbines condition the steaa or Techniques used with low quality wells include separation of the liquid phase from the steam, flashing of the stearn to a lower pressure and higher quality before separation and the use of a binary cycle with a more thermodynanically suitable working fluid such as isobutane. All of these methods involve alossof some of the available energy i n the stean a t ther wellhead. Flashing the stean inzreases its entropy and decreases the available energy. There is also a substantial aiiount of energy lost in the liquid phase discarded at the separator. In the binary cycle, there is an increase in entropy intrinsically associated with the complexity of such a system. Heat transfer across a non-zero temperature difference and flow losses decrease the available ena-gy. These losses of available energy and the cost involved in these complex conventional systems are the prime motivations for developing engines to handle total two-phase flow from the wellhead. The most pronising of the total flow machines is the Lysholm engine or helical screw expanderCFigure 11. The Lysholm machine consists of a pair of parallel rotors with meshing helical lobes which, with their casing, form compression/expansion chambers.
