TEST RESULTS 32 theoretical flow rate, is the amount of fluid leaking out of the inlet while the inlet is open. Since the theoretical flow rate is entirely independent of exhaust pressure, any variation in total flow rate with exhaust pressure is reflected in the leakage flow rate. The variation in leakage rate with exhaust pressure is thus minimal. The total flow rate and leakage rate are constant at higher pressure ratios. Thereisonly a slight drop off at lower pressure ratios. There are two leakage mechanisms operating in the engine. One involves leakage from chamber to chamber around the edges of the lobes, or through a blowhole which exists where the rotor seal lines meet at the mesh line. This blowhole forms a zig-zag path from chanber to chamber down the mesh line. The second leakage mechanisn is leakage from each chamber into the exhausting chambers through the meshline. The engine geoinetry is such that across the mesh line from each expanding chamber is a chamber open to the exhaust and having a pressure equal to the exhaust pressure. Since the chamber pressures are over twice the exhaust pressure down much of the mesh line, leakage to the exhaust is often choked flow, and thus independent of exhaust pressure. Both leakage mechanisms could be operating in the inlet charnber while it is open. The invariance of the leakage flow with exhaust pressure at high pressure ratios suggests that the leakage out of the inlet is a l l choked flow a t lower exhaust pressures. This implies that either the dominant leakage mechanism in the inlet chamber isleakage through the mesh line into the exhaust or that the pressure difference between the inlet and the next chamber is sufficient to result in choked flow. Tests show that pressure in the chambers located near the inlet varies with exhaust pressure, indicating that leakage from chamber to chamber is a significant mechanism.
