C200 Rig Development: Rigs: • Thrust Bearing • Rotor Dynamic • Radial Bearing • Compressor impeller • Recuperator Rig • Injector Rig Thrust Bearing Rig: • Baseline: Verified test rig performance with existing C60 thrust bearing previously tested on the C60 rig • Tested initial AMTS thrust bearing design, then made modifications to improve load capacity and power consumption 28 unique bearings based on original hardware Approximately 100 “fine tuning” variations based on best of the initial bearings, most were completed before engine hardware drawings were even finalized Final design tuned to require a minimal break-in • Present best demonstrated load is 375 lbf @ 60 krpm • Present engine design will consume less than 750 watts at operating conditions • Max engine thrust load capable bearing was demonstrated. • Reduced the overall risk: Rotor Dynamic Rig: • Test rig features: Test rotor matches engine rotor weight and inertia (at the time) Uses same generator and bearings as engine Test rotor built using and verifying engine assembly tooling (very important during early development stage) Features to add known unbalance at the impeller and turbine Convenient access to more measurement points than in an engine • Test rig assembled and operated to 100% speed without problems on first attempt • Rotordynamics model validated for rigid body critical speeds • Test rig used to test proposed engine hardware (ex. heavier blower) • Test rig used for validation of balancing methods and verification of improved response with in-phase balancing • Test rig used for overspeed (110% speed) testing of bearings and magnet shaft plus (planned) magnet burst testing • Test rig used for damping measurements of bearing designs 29
