percent of the energy mix. By 2010, oil’s share was less than 40 percent while natural gas accounted for 30 percent. Coal’s share in the energy mix saw a modest increase. Wood also played a far more prominent role in 1970; it was the second most important energy source after oil, accounting for 17 percent of the energy mix. It now represents around 7 percent. During the same period of time, hydroelectricity’s share more than doubled to 8 percent while the share of energy from sugar cane increased to 7 percent, from 4 percent. Non-fossil fuels, excluding hydroelectricity, make up a modest 4 percent of the region’s energy mix. This includes nuclear, geothermal, wind, and solar sources. Latin America’s Energy Resources Latin America is home to the second largest reserves of oil outside the Middle East. The region’s natural gas and coal reserves are, however, not as large. Fossil fuels are not distributed equally in Latin America.
