2.1.1.2 Concluding Remarks From the literature review conducted here, it can be concluded that the use of ORC for power generation from a low-grade waste heat source is technically and commercially feasible, as well as economically viable. Commercial ORC systems have been in the market since the beginning of the 1980’s and have been providing waste heat recovery (WHR), biomass combined heat and power, geothermal and solar solutions (see Figure 2–1) in a broad range of power and temperature levels, as shown in Table 2-1. From the data provided by the ORC manufacturers (see Figure 2–2), it can be inferred that the installed power and the number of plants in operation show an exponential growth over the years. This shows that the market has grown at a rapid pace ever since the first installation in the 1980s. However; there are still issues that are hindering the growth of the technology, which include the economics of scale of the process, the scepticism by some top decision-makers in the industry, and the neglect of waste heat recovery by both governments and key industry decision-makers. As rightly said by Aries, it is not easy to convince people to buy it (Alford, 2005). This particular problem is still persistent to date and is hindering the wide acceptance of the technology in the industrial sector.
