44 4 ORGANIC RANKINE CYCLE ANALYSIS 4.1 Introduction The rapid screening model developed in Chapter three allows the evaluation of organic Rankine cycles with specified boundary conditions and component performance criteria. This model enables the exploration of the practical limits for ORC performance as well as the comparison of alternative configurations from within a single, consistent, framework. In this chapter, two such studies are presented. The first considers the thermodynamic potential of alternative organic Rankine cycle configurations. There is little discussion in the literature regarding ORC configurations that deviate from the reference configuration presented in section 2.2.1. This study will consider the efficiency benefit of alternative cycle configurations based on a realistic baseline design.
