84 Cost Function Analysis The optimized design presented in section 5.3.2 is heavily dependent on the cost functions presented in section 5.2.5. It is useful to understand the significance of the scaling and proportionality factors used in equations [5.2.19] and [5.2.20]. The optimization in section 5.3.2 does not alter system output, indicating that the only sources of variation in NIR are the portion of plant cost represented by the solar field and the scaling exponents for heat exchanger and solar field size. Table 5.3 shows the contribution of each parameter, assuming equal uncertainty for each parameter, to total uncertainty.
