Understanding the dominant parameters will provide design information for future storage systems for solar power applications in addition to providing a framework for interpreting the results of more complex simulation and modeling efforts. It is helpful to characterize system performance in terms of dimensionless quantities. Figure 6.6 shows the relationship between the location of the fluid thermocline during a charge cycle and U. U can also be thought of an average normalized penetration depth (δconv/L).
