ADBA News work begiNs oN biometHaNe traNsport strategy ADBA’s Transport working group is leading the development of an industry strategy for biomethane used as a transport fuel. The strategy will demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of supporting the use of biomethane as a transport fuel. It will then outline how government can help realise this potential and will set a clear timeline for the development of infrastructure to support biomethane vehicles. The group agreed that it was essential to first make the case for the benefits of biomethane over other transport fuel options; in terms of the environmental benefits, the focus will be on improvements in air quality and Co2 emissions. A key part of demonstrating the economic viability of biomethane vehicles will involve cost benefit analyses, potentially around how economic models for gas fleets would be affected by differentiation in fuel tax rates. ADBA is also keen to demonstrate the viability of the technology through case studies of successful vehicle and infrastructure projects – members with such evidence are urged to contact matt.hindle@adbiogas.co.uk In addition, the group considered fiscal incentives to be the key to rapid expansion in the sector, with tax rates and government incentives needing to recognise and coherently support the benefits of gas vehicles. other obstacles to development to be addressed included refuelling infrastructure, vehicle availability and feedstock availability.
