Sustainability there are changes ahead for the uK’s renewable energy producers. The renewable energy Directive (reD), set to come into force by 15 December 2012, will require renewable energy operations from all eu member states, including the uK, to meet a set of sustainability criteria in order to qualify for incentives including the renewables obligation (ro), renewable Transport Fuels obligation (rTFo) and the renewable Heat Incentive (rHI), with the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) expected to follow suit. such criteria will need to be met before any energy generation qualifies for a renewable incentive. The sustainability criteria set out within the reD demands that renewable energy generation makes a minimum greenhouse gas (gHg) saving of 35% compared to the fossil fuel average, rising to 50% in 2017 and to 60% in 2018 for new installations. However, the uK government has gone one step further, proposing immediate 60% gHg savings on the fossil fuel average for both the ro and rHI for AD plants over 1 mw. For electricity generation under the ro, this is the equivalent to lifecycle emissions of 285.12 kg Co2eq per mwh or below, which must be supported by a statement of verification. Plants treating only animal manures and slurries would be exempt from the criteria, How greeN caN you be? On-farm AD plants have helped to reduce the harmful emissions caused by traditional farming practices while those under 1 mw would still be obliged to report their performance but would not be required to meet the criteria to receive roCs.
