Electratherm’s Green Machine turns waste heat into electricity ever more important. Hot water enters the green machine at 77-116°C, creating a pressurised vapour which expands through a patented twin screw power block before condensing back into a liquid and flowing back to repeat the process. “systems such as this are at the heart of future sustainable AD production,” adds Celeste. Converting waste heat into electricity can undoubtedly help to increase a site’s efficiency, but the actual generation of heat has long been an afterthought for AD operators – until now. “The recent rHI announcement proposing to increase capacity for heat is fantastic news,” enthuses Cath Anthony. “If we assume that half of the typical output from a CHP engine is heat and half is electricity, it has made no sense to waste 50%. Incentivising heat will ensure that the entire output is maximised.” DeCC’s consultation proposes removing the current 200 kw limit on biogas combustion under the rHI, stating: ‘Combined heat and power biogas installations are a growing market but the current limit of 200 kw in the rHI creates an additional barrier for heat generation compared to electricity generation. we therefore propose introducing support under the rHI for biogas combustion over 200 kw.’ As the 200 kw limit was originally described as temporary, the proposals to permanently provide support for projects above that level have been welcomed by ADBA.
