Regions News from tHe regioNs Welsh food businesses sign up to waste agreement According to wrAP Cymru, every tonne of avoidable food waste costs a business £1,800. By encouraging more businesses to sign up to the Hospitality and Food service Agreement, the organisation aims to reduce food and associated packaging waste by 5 per cent by 2015 and ensure that at least 70 per cent of food and packaging waste from the sector is recycled, treated by AD or composted. Castell Howell Foods and pub chain s.A. Brain and Co. are the first welsh signatories of the agreement, which is also supported by the millennium stadium and the welsh government. To find out more contact hugh.jones@wrap.org.uk Scottish RO levels announced The scottish government has confirmed that support under the renewables obligation (ro) will be degressed at the same rate as england and wales, beginning in 2015 with support for AD falling to 1.9 from its current 2 roC/mwh level, and to 1.8 in 2016. In line with DeCC’s decision on ro support, the scottish government will also retain the current arrangements for generators for 50 kw to 5 mw. Scottish landfill tax draws closer The scottish government has announced the introduction of a Landfill Tax Bill as part of its goal to ban all food waste to landfill by 2020. The Bill will set out proposals to establish the administration, charges and rules governing a uniquely scottish landfill tax, due to take effect from 2015, with a consultation expected to be published by the end of 2012. ADBA welcomes NI small scale FIT proposal Like the rest of the uK, the Northern Ireland renewables obligation (NIro) is due to close to new generation by 2017, to be replaced by the FIT Contract for Difference (CfD). However, due to the complexity of the CfD, the recent Northern Ireland energy Bill consultation proposed introducing a small scale FIT incentive for AD projects under 5 mw. In its response to the consultation, ADBA welcomed the introduction of a FIT for Northern Irish AD installations under 5 mw but emphasised the need for the region to maintain its 4 roCs/mwh for AD projects at all levels up to 2017, to which the NI government has so far committed. NI agri-food strategy – ADBA’s response ADBA’s response to a call for evidence on a strategy for the agri-food sector in Northern Ireland detailed how integrating AD into the farming and food and drink processing sectors can help to deliver economic growth, as well as aiding food security, energy security and a reduction in Co2 emissions.
