Policy miNisters give guarDeD backiNg to aD owen Paterson mP, the new secretary of state for the environment, Food and rural Affairs, gave his backing to AD during the 2012 Conservative Party Conference, telling delegates that ‘the concept of anaerobic digestion, for example, is tremendous. we have a huge volume of food waste in this country which we should use for power rather than sending to landfill’. However, concerns remain about both mr Paterson’s attitude to purpose grown crops in AD and government support for renewables more generally - although the Chancellor mentioned investment in renewable energy in his speech, his main energy proposal was to explore tax breaks for shale gas exploration. ADBA Chief executive Charlotte morton called for the government to prioritise biogas as the best form of renewable gas: “mr osborne has recognised we need to invest in gas; however, we would like to see more focused support for our best source of unconventional gas, biogas from AD, which can provide energy security at a lower cost and, since it’s renewable, with far lower carbon emissions and environmental impact than more experimental technologies like shale gas.” Ed Davey voiced support for renewable gas at the recent Lib Dem Conference The Liberal Democrats used their conference to reject the idea ‘that we have to choose between going green and going for growth’, a statement made by Deputy Prime minister Nick Clegg and which was also pushed by Climate Change secretary ed Davey mP. elsewhere at the Lib Dem Conference, mr Davey revealed to a fringe meeting that he ‘loves renewable gas – who wouldn’t?!’, and new farming minister David Heath mP expressed his support for AD in several meetings. However, mr Heath also suggested that he would be concerned if the expansion of plants which only use purpose grown crops came at the expense of plants taking waste materials. ADBA is addressing the issues raised by Defra ministers about purpose grown crops – see ADBA News p5. George Osborne’s proposal for shale gas tax breaks has been criticised official statistics HigHligHt a rise iN aD wrAP’s official figures now show 83 AD plants operating outside the water sector in the uK, a significant increase from the 54 in operation when the AD strategy and Action Plan was published in June 2011. In further positive news for the sector, separate statistics published by DeCC have shown that electricity generation from AD has increased by almost a third in the past year, generating 69 gwh in the second quarter of 2012, up 30% from the same period in the previous year.
