Founded by michael Chesshire and will Llewellyn in october 2011, the company has just completed its first plant at Low Luckens organic resource Centre, Cumbria, set to become fully operational at the end of November 2012. Digesting grass silage and farmyard manure, the plant will generate 50 kw for export, with surplus heat to be used in polytunnels. evergreen’s design differs from conventional AD plants in its use of a partially-buried digester, operated on the ‘plug flow’ principle. The digester, nicknamed ‘Dorothy’ by community- based Bridport renewable energy group (Breg), is located in an off-grid low- impact market garden run on permaculture principles and ethics, and is being fed a diet of lawn cuttings, which come from the general maintenance of the site. The resulting biogas is used to fuel the tea urn while the liquid fertiliser is helping to produce better crops. “Anaerobic digestion is being seen as particularly relevant to small-scale food producers who are finding it increasingly difficult to make a living from food production alone,” comments Breg volunteer richard Toft. In addition, as the range is limited to only the most essential components of a traditional AD plant, it can be installed within a short timeframe. www.bts-biogas.com BTS Biogas allow farmers to exploit their manure supply moDular aD uNits turN liQuiD resiDues iNto eNergy Clearfleau’s on-site AD unit is suited to food and drink processors while the AD marketplace is evolving rapidly, there is still a perception that it only operates at large scale, something which on-site AD technology provider Clearfleau is looking to change. “Food and drink processors produce residues with a significant renewable energy value,” explains Director richard gueterbock. “If digested on-site, these can supply energy back to the factory.” Clearfleau’s on-site plants produce energy from liquid residues, reducing energy and treatment costs, and in addition to its larger plants the company is developing a modular AD unit for lower flows.
