Members’ News & Views waitrose Diverts all fooD waste from laNDfill waitrose has achieved its aim of sending zero food waste to landfill three months ahead of schedule, with the announcement that all 280 of its uK branches will now send food waste which is unfit for consumption for recycling. The supermarket was the first in the uK to send food waste to AD in 2008 through its partnership with waste management company Cawleys, and will continue to use AD as a sustainable alternative to landfill for all of its uK branches, also using in-vessel composting (IVC) where AD is not an option. “It’s not in our interest to produce any food waste at all, which is why we work hard to minimise it in the first instance,” explains waitrose recycling & waste manager, mike walters. “Inevitably we generate some surplus food, and where it is not fit to be donated to the local community, AD has proven to be a sustainable way of eliminating the need to send it to landfill, reducing our impact on the environment and creating renewable energy along the way.” www.waitrose.com All 280 UK Waitrose branches send food waste to AD traNt Delivers improveD sluDge works for Jersey goverNmeNt Jersey’s sludge treatment facilities have been enhanced by water engineering specialist Trant Construction. The island’s government selected Trant to design and construct new sludge thickening and dewatering facilities at Bellozanne sewage Treatment works (sTw), st Helier, operated by The states of Jersey’s Transport and Technical services (TTs) Department. “Trant Construction welcomed the opportunity to be involved in this interesting and challenging project,” comments wayne Broadbent, Project manager for Trant. “we have again been able to demonstrate our capabilities in providing a complete turnkey service.” Trant Construction, together with in-house company Trant systems electrical, carried out the process, civil, mechanical, electrical and ICA design for the project, and was also responsible for the civil, mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning.
