Members’ News & Views cpi select geotecH aNalyser The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) has selected a geotech Aems biogas analyser for the scientific measurement of gas composition from digesters at its Anaerobic Digestion Development Centre (ADDC) in wilton, redcar. The CPI’s open-access lab and pilot scale facility are designed to optimise and enhance AD technology and help organisations, both public and private, to de-risk projects before investing in AD infrastructure. The geotech analyser was selected to measure key data including CH4, Co2, o2 and H2s and has quickly proved its worth, as the ADDC’s steven Broome explains: “The analyser has allowed our scientists to quickly and accurately appraise the quality and composition of biogas being produced from novel feedstock and technology combinations. In the right context, this can provide our clients with a key piece of information from both a commercial and scientific perspective.” www.geotechuk.com fooD waste Demo plaNt to close Ludlow-based Biocycle, the uK’s first demonstration food waste AD plant owned by shropshire Council and operated by Biogen, is to close at the end of 2012 after six years of operation. “The plant has fully delivered on its original objectives and we are proud and grateful to have been a part of the groundbreaking journey,” states Biogen’s Chief executive richard Barker. “The plant has contributed to extensive research into AD technology of food waste, thus benefitting the entire AD industry, and we have recently invested in three pilot scale digesters to further advance our research and development activities at Ludlow,” adds richard. www.biogen.co.uk caulmert coNsult oN New aD plaNt engineering, environmental and planning consultants Caulmert have been appointed by a uK waste management company to provide permitting assistance for a proposed new 0.5 mw AD plant with the potential to process up to 15,000 tpa of food and other organic waste. Located in the south west of england, the site currently holds a permit for a waste transfer station, which will be varied to cover the AD plant. Caulmert will prepare an H1 environmental risk assessment to form part of the eP variation application and an assessment in accordance with H4 odour management guidance will also be carried out, as odour is considered a determining factor. www.caulmert.com Geotech’s AEMS analyses biogas composition integral to CPI research HealtHy Digesters eQual HealtHy profits An accurate method for measuring the amount of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) present within a digester has been developed by Aqua enviro Ltd. Digesters operate well when the production of volatile acids is in balance with the conversion of these acids to methane, but if digester loadings are too high VFAs will build up, causing methane generation to reduce. similarly, low methane production will also be found if loadings are too low.
