5 Generating electricity and heat by biomass and waste combustion. In the classic steam turbine process, biomass such as bark, wood chips, sawdust or waste material is burned. The resultant steam is released and drives a generator to produce electricity. Co-firing in a fossil-fuelled power plant is also possible. The heat generated can be used additionally as process heat or for district heating (com- bined cycle). Depending on the feedstock used as fuel, temperatures up to 540°C can be reached.
