Solar/thermal National policies that will promote use of solar water heaters Funding for programmes that will promote the use of solar crop dryers and solar pumps for irrigation in the agricultural sector A decision by the utility companies to use solar energy where best suited, e.g. streetlights, etc. Funding for the continuation of work at the University of the West Indies on solar dryers, distillers, etc. Hydro energy The present potential for the application of this energy source is now very low. However, as concerns for the environment and good policies reverse some of the damage done to the watershed, it is possible that the streams and rivers may once again flow with sufficient volume to permit some small continuous flow pumps to be installed, either for grid connection or for stand alone electricity and energy supply in remote areas. An important action, therefore, is for watershed management and reforestation programmes to be instituted and sustained.
