6.2 Pressure Ratio Studies First, the effect of pressure ratio on the cycle performance was investigated in the same manner as for the simple Brayton cycle in Chapter 4. A total volume of 120m3 of heat exchangers was used and their volume split was optimized for the optimum pressure ratio (2.6). The system pressure ratio was then changed in order to see the effect of pressure ratio on the cycle characteristics. As can be seen from Figure 6.3 the pressure ratio significantly affects the cycle efficiency. The earlier studies of recompression cycles usually pointed out that the cycle is not very sensitive to the pressure ratio [Feher, 1967]. The reason for departure from this conclusion is that in this analysis the heat exchanger geometry is fixed. The situation would be different if heat exchangers were re-optimized for every pressure ratio.
