818 With more than 100 years of worldwide experience in geothermal operations including • the design and operation of hydrothermal power plants, especially flashsteam and binary plants – the likely systems of choice for EGS power projects, • geothermal well drilling, • reservoir engineering and management, and • abatement systems to mitigate environmental impacts, future EGS power plant facilities can be designed and operated to have relatively small impacts on the local and regional environment. In fact, because EGS plants have a small footprint and can operate essentially emissionsfree, the overall environmental impact of EGS power facilities is likely to be positive, reducing the growth of greenhouse gas emissions while providing a reliable and safe source of electricity. 8.5 Concluding Remarks Chapter 8 Environmental Impacts, Attributes, and Feasibility Criteria • Acceptable local effects of heat rejection • Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
