Figure 7 illustrates the renewable energy contribution by individual renewable energy technologies to electrical power production. As with energy, geothermal is the third largest source of renewable electricity after hydro and biomass. In areas where geothermal resources are available, such as California, the percentage of electricity derived from geothermal sources can exceed 7 times the national electricity average. Most geothermal production is concentrated in the western states. In California, the state with the largest amount of geothermal power on-line, electricity from geothermal resources accounted for 5 percent of the stateís electricity generation in 2003 on a per kilowatt hour basis.18 California has an installed capacity of 2478MW of geothermal power plants.19 Geothermal is the largest non-hydro renewable energy source in the state, nearly equaling the combined total of all other renewable sources of electricity, excluding large scale hydro.
