The data refers to specific working power plants. Note that even the more efficient coal plant, the Cherokee plant of 2003, where emissions controls have been installed as a result of the Denver Metro Emission Reduction Plan (MERP),43 emits 24 times more carbon dioxide, about 11,000 times more sulfur dioxide, and 4,000 times more nitrous oxides per megawatt hour than a geothermal steam plant. While a megawatt (MW) measures power capacity, a megawatt hour measures actual energy production.
