1.1 Need CHAPTER 1 With the cost of energy constantly increasing and the whole world turning towards being more environmentally friendly and more energy efficient there is a need for more alternative and renewable sources of energy. One of these sources is an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). ORC’s convert low temperature waste heat into electricity and emit absolutely no carbon dioxide or pollutants. ORC’s fall under the category of micro turbines which mean that if a facility implements an ORC they are able to file for certain tax breaks and incentives from the state and federal government that can make the purchase and implementation of ORC’s easier and cheaper for the facilities that are installing them. Although these cycles are only approximately 10% to 15% efficient they are utilizing energy from exhaust gases which is otherwise wasted and expelled into the atmosphere.
