1.6 Fluid Selection Efficient operation of an Organic Rankine Cycle is primarily a function of two parameters: the working conditions of the cycle and the thermodynamic properties of the working fluid used in the cycle. Three main types of working fluids exist that can be used in ORC’s. These types are classified by their slope on the vapor side of the saturation curve. The plot in Figure 1.3 is a sample saturation dome that has been cut off after the inflection point in order to display the different type of fluid slopes. Figure 1.3 below shows a comparison of the types of fluids classified by their slopes on a T-s diagram.
