The Mülligen post centre. An integral component of the energy network. Mülligen post centre. As part of its reorganization of mail service, the Swiss Post converted the Mülligen packaging centre in Schlieren near Zurich into a mail-sorting centre in 2006, re- newing its energy centre at the same time. Some 40 000 letters are processed per hour in the 1000000 m3 building. This new energy supply facility is part of the Schlieren energy network. The post centre requires 9500 MWh of heat annually. The use of waste heat from the Werdhölzli treatment plant is a key factor in this sup- ply. The treated wastewater serves well as a source for heat pumps, since it main- tains a temperature of around 10 Celsius even during cold winters. Some of the treated wastewater is pumped through a duct to the mail centre 1.5 km away, where a heat pump operating with ammo- nia, a natural refrigerant, produces heat at 65 Celsius.PDF Image | Schlieren energy network waste heat power
