They work on solar thermal sys- tems for water heating, air conditioning, and water detoxification. In Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, and other LAC countries, a few researchers from different institutions are working on solar energy, whether independently or in small groups, but all of them with very low budgets. In LAC, R&D activities on solar energy began in the early 1970s; during the following years, they gained increasing interest, along with a steady flow of specific govern- mental funding support. Then, after a lull that lasted from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, these days we are seeing a renewed interest in this area. Apparently, the origin of present-day research funds has shifted to national universities and non-specific national foundations. The private sector, probably due to its higher public environmental awareness, as well as the requirement of envi- ronmental impact analyses when requesting international loans for development projects, tougher global competition, and its own awareness of fossil fuel deple- tion, is showing increasing interest in this kind of initiatives.
