Axial turbines: In this type of turbine, nozzles accelerate the fluid and direct fluid toward rotor. The flow passes in axial direction. They are suitable for higher power ranges in comparison with radial types. Historically axial turbines where used for geothermal ORC applications. But in case of single stage axial turbine they limit the pressure ratio (Ratio between inlet fluid pressure and outlet fluid pressure). This problem is not encountered in radial inflow turbines. In radial type, working fluid is able to be operated close to its critical pressure (Marcuccilli & Zouaghi, 2007). Expanders: Figure 33: Axial turbine Source: Pointwise.65 Main type of expanders in ORC applications is screw expander. Screw expanders are pair of helical rotors in a casing. During rotation, the trapped volume is increased and this causes expansion. If they rotate in other direction, they work as compressors. If liquid is present, there will not be so much drawbacks on performance and efficiency of the machine.
