ExCo Meetings The ExCo held two Meetings in 2010 to discuss and review the GIA‘s efforts and plan future activities. 23rd ExCo Meeting, 22-23 April 2010, Bali, Indonesia The 23rd ExCo Meeting was held on 22-23 April 2010, at the Meliã Bali-Indonesia Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, in association with the World Geothermal Congress 2010 (WGC2010). There were 21 attendees in total, including 8 ExCo Members, 7 Alternate Members and 6 Observers, including a representative of prospective Member Peoples Republic of China and the GIA Secretary (see photo in Appendix A). Several European participants who had planned to take part were prevented from doing so because of cancelled flights due to a large volcanic eruption in Iceland. Norway, the GIA‘s newest member, officially participated at its first ExCo Meeting. A World Geothermal Congress is held every 5 years and is the premiere event for the international geothermal community. The IEA-GIA‘s final preparations for participation at the WGC2010 were confirmed, including the operation and staffing of an exhibition booth that the GIA was sponsoring during the 5-day event. The ExCo unanimously re-elected Chris Bromley (New Zealand) as Chair, and Jonas Ketilsson (Iceland) and Barry Goldstein (Australia) were unanimously elected as Vice-Chairs for technical matters and policy, respectively. The GIA‘s participation in the IEA Geothermal Roadmap effort was discussed; several GIA participants had taken part in the first Workshop (March 2010) and support for GIA participation in the remaining 2 workshops was strongly recommended. The GIA had also provided US$ 10k support via a successful proposal. Annexes I, III, VII and VIII held meetings on 21 April 2010; however, the Annex X meeting was cancelled because both co-Leaders were unable to attend due to the Iceland volcano eruption. Progress reports from Annexes I, III, VII and VIII, and 8 Country and 3 Sponsor (industry/organization) Members were presented and discussed. In addition, a representative of prospective member Peoples Republic of China presented a guest report: Update of Geothermal R&D Activities in China. The GIA‘s continued excellent financial position led the ExCo to vote to make US$ 75 k available for the year to fund proposals for work that support organization and Annex activities, and proposals were sought. The Secretary reported on the Secretariat operation, including the work accomplished and status of budgets, for the entire 2009-year and the 2010-year to March 2010. A work plan and revised budget for the remainder of 2010 was presented and an update on the Common Fund given, all unanimously accepted by the ExCo. The Proceedings for the joint IEA-GIA~IGA Madrid Workshop had been completed, preparations for the GIA‘s participation at the WGC 2010 completed, and the GIA‘s major contribution to the IEA Geothermal Essentials brochure described. Excellent progress had been made on the Geothermics Special Issue on Sustainable Utilization of Geothermal Energy, which had been partially funded by a successful proposal submitted in 2009, and it was on schedule for publication at the end of the year. Mike Mongillo presented the IEA Secretariat report for Takatsune Ito, who was not able to attend the meeting. The IEA‘s recent activities and publications were reviewed, including the GIA‘s contributions to the Cities, Towns and Renewable Energy report and the IEA Renewable Energy 29
