First results of the data collection were presented on the 26th ExCo Meeting, September 2011 in London. Annex X data for geothermal electricity and heat production were of good quality and can be used to display developments in geothermal applications in GIA countries from 2010 on. Furthermore, with the support of correspondent publications it is also possible to show trends for geothermal power generation and heat from the year 2000 on. 6.4 Results of the First Data Query– an Overview Geothermal heat and power: In 2010, the installed capacity in geothermal power plants in GIA countries accounted for nearly 7,900 MWe. Geothermal plants in GIA countries produced about 50,000 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of geothermal power, constituting over 70% of the world‘s total geothermal electricity. Installed capacities in geothermal installations producing heat (direct uses and heat pumps) reached 20,000 MWt, with a produced heat exceeding 55,000 GWh in 2010, which makes nearly 50% of the world‘s total. The most important 2010 applications data derived from Annex X and additional sources are summarized in Figure 6.2.  CO2- and energy savings: The distributed Annex X data sheet includes automatic calculations of fossil fuel savings and CO2-savings for the replacement of oil, gas or coal by geothermal applications. The calculation is based on the GIA conversion (Mongillo, 2005). In 2010, the fossil fuel savings by geothermal uses in GIA countries reached 16 million tons of oil equivalent. Carbon dioxide savings by geothermal power generation ranged from 38 million tonnes of CO2 for the replacement of coal, to 33 million tonnes for oil and 8 million tons of CO2 for the replacement of gas. For heating, CO2 emission savings reached 5 (gas), 20 (oil) up to 24 million tons of CO2 (coal) saved by geothermal uses.  Economics: The first data collection resulted in a lack of data on economic information, like plant costs, number of employees and investments in geothermal energy. The resulting poor database does not allow an overview for GIA countries to be produced. To collect at least some information on the importance of geothermal as an economic factor, the questionnaire concept will be simplified with regard to these points. AdditionalInformation: TheAnnexXdatacollectionprovidessupplementary information on geothermal developments, such as national policy, the role of geothermal in the national energy mix, geothermal highlights, and support mechanisms. This information provides an interesting framework for the first report on trends in geothermal applications in GIA countries. 6.5 Plans for 2011 and Beyond  Revision of the questionnaire according to the first experiences with the 2010 data.  Publication of a first Annex X report ―Trends in Geothermal Applications 2000 – 2010: Survey Report on Geothermal Energy Uses in GIA Countries.‖  Data collection for 2011 starting in July 2012; an early deadline is targeted. Inclusion of non-GIA data in future reports. 72
