10.2.5 Industry Expenditure on Geothermal R&D The amount of the French industrial effort for R&D is totally unknown. Several national technological clusters have however been put in place to develop collaborative R&D projects between industry and the research institutions: Avenia, based in Aquitaine, deals notably with deep geothermal applications, Synergiles aims at developing renewable energies in the overseas department, Dream (Orléans), is focused on water and environmental impacts, S2E2 (Orléans) deals with smart buildings, Advancity for smart cities, Tenerrdis for several renewables, Derbi for heat storage, etc. Among them, the Avenia and Dream national clusters have been created in 2010. 10.3 Current Status of Geothermal Energy Use 10.3.1 Electricity Generation The installed capacity consists of two power plants: The Bouillante Power Plant in Guadeloupe (French West Indies)- The plant has two units: Bouillante 1, a double-flash turbine, has been running since 1986 and Bouillante 2 (single-flash turbine) since 2004 (Figure 10.4). The gross installed capacity is 15.8 MWe but Bouillante 1 is now working at a reduced level because of its great age.
