The plant has not produced a lot in 2010 due to technical problems on the one hand, and improvement works performed on the wells and pipes on the other hand. A partial reinjection is being put in place and will be started in 2011. Its main objective is to maintain a sufficient pressure inside the reservoir. Geothermie Bouillante, which owns the power plant, is a subsidiary of BRGM and EDF. The plant is operated and maintained by CFG Services, a subsidiary of BRGM. The EGS pilot plant in Soultz-sous-Forêts (Alsace; Figure 10.5)- The first tests of the ORC turbine have been launched in September 2010. Its gross capacity is 2.5 MWe for a net capacity of about 1.5 MWe. For now, it has been run at a lower operating capacity of 1.5 MWe (gross): the flow rates were indeed less than initially expected due to reinjection difficulties. The power will probably be better in 2011 as an additional well will be used for reinjection; the connection of the plant to the electrical grid is planned at the beginning of 2011. (Photo courtesy of Energivie) This pilot plant is run by the European Economic Interest Grouping "Exploitation Minière de la Chaleur", which is gathering 6 French and German companies. As the single EGS plant in the world, it is a precious laboratory for European research, which gathers many research institutes from France, Germany, Switzerland and Norway. No new wells have been drilled in 2010 even though other exploration drillings are being planned in the geothermal concession of Bouillante, in other parts of the concession than the place where the current plant is located. Even if this electricity production is negligible compared to the national demand, it is important to notice that the installed capacity in Guadeloupe represents around 6% of the need for electricity of the island.
