10.7.2 Government Funded R&D is mainly funded by ADEME, with a budget of a few million euros. ANR also funds some research, which is more often upstream or focused on energy storage. 10.7.3 IndustryFunded Some research work is being done on equipment (thermodynamic cycles, pumps, etc.). Another important part of the investment is dedicated to geothermal exploration. 10.8 Geothermal Education The major part of the educational programs deal with ground source heat pumps, as this sector will hire the majority of the people involved in geothermal energy. Initial training is being developed by universities, and continuous training is also an issue; ADEME funds a part of these continuous trainings. France has participated to the GEOTRAINET project through BRGM. Thanks to this European project that ended at the very beginning of 2011, trainings were made for drillers and designers of very low enthalpy geothermal projects. 10.9 International Cooperative Activities In addition to the French activities within IEA-GIA, notably the participation in Annex VIII- Direct Use of Geothermal Energy, there is also a French representation in: The Joint Programme on Geothermal Energy in the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA JPGE): the EERA is a tool that has been decided by the SET Plan to coordinate European research so that it contributes actively to answer the energetic challenges. A working group has been formed, in which France is actively represented by BRGM, and has written a common research programme on geothermal energy. This program has officially been launched in June 2010. The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) gathers the European geothermal industry. It is currently working on a strategic research agenda and it takes part to several European R&D projects on technical and non-technical. The European technology platform on Renewable heating & cooling (ETP RH&C), which has a geothermal panel in which France has an expert through BRGM. 10.10 Future Outlook During the year 2010, several events suggest a development of deep geothermal in France: Many permits for geothermal exploration have been asked for by industry, especially for electricity production in the mainland The synthesis study in Martinique will probably be followed by surface exploration and exploration drillings An Interreg project is under construction in order to develop geothermal energy in the Caribbean region 107PDF Image | Geothermal Research and Tech IEA
