GEOLOGY AND GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE SUMMARIES GEOLOGY Stratigraphy Though there exists a sequence of Precambrian through Triassic age rocks more than 5,500 feet thick in the Glenwood Springs region of northwestern Colorado, the most important formations, with respect to the subject of geothermal resources are, from oldest to youngest: the Mississippian Leadville Limestone, the lowermost Pennsylvanian age Molas formation, the lower Pennsylvanian age Belden formation, and the lower-middle Pennsylvanian age Eagle Valley evaporite. Together, these units can aggregate up to about 3,800 feet in thickness, though the evaporite sequence alone can vary by more than 2,500 feet. Figure 2 is a summary geologic map of the Glenwood Springs area (From Bishop-Brogdan Associates, 1994). Figure 2. Geology of the Glenwood Springs area. Leadville Limestone – The Leadville Limestone ranges in thickness from 175 to 225 feet. It comprises chiefly Limestone, however the lower 60-80 feet are interbedded Limestone, dolomite typically containing abundant nodes of dark grey chert, and minor shale. The upper half of the formation consists of massive, grey, oolitic Limestone. It forms striking cliffs that are conspicuous all through the Glenwood Springs vicinity. The top of the formation has been eroded by meteoric and ground waters to form what is called “karst topography”.
