The Leadville Limestone has very prominent bedding planes, often wavy in appearance, is transected by closely spaced orthogonal joint systems, and contains many solution cavities, some of which can be enormous (like the “Fairy Caves” above Glenwood Springs). It is this combination of eroded bedding planes, densely spaced joints and abundant solution features, when added to the 2-3% matrix permeability, that make the Leadville ideal as an aquifer capable of holding and transmitting large amounts of thermal water. Molas formation – The Molas formation comprises dull purplish-maroon to yellow and/or orange clay that contains smooth, round to elliptical chert nodules, concretions and boulders. It can be up to 25 feet thick where it overlies on the karstified top of the Leadville Limestone. It is an aquaclude (a formation that prevents or inhibits fluid through-flow), not an aquifer (a formation that contains and allows fluid through-flow). Belden formation – The Belden formation comprises interbedded shales, Limestones, gypsum, and some thin gritty sandstones that range in thickness from about 600 to about 1,000 feet in the general vicinity of Glenwood Springs. The Belden formation directly overlies the Molas formation and is overlain by the Eagle Valley Evaporites (Paradox formation). The clayey, shaley nature of the Belden makes it an important seal on top over the permeable Leadville aquifer.
