Eagle Valley Evaporites (Paradox formation) – Directly overlying the Belden formation are the 1,550 foot thick beds of the Eagle Valley Evaporites. This formation comprises thick (65-165 feet) layers of gypsiferous siltstone interbedded with thin beds of fissile black shale, and some locally thick salt accumulations. The gypsum (CaSO4), through which meteoric waters percolate on their way down to the Leadville Limestone, is the consensus choice of previous area geoscientists as the source for the sulfate in the thermal waters issuing from the Leadville while the salt (NaCl) also leaches from the evaporite sequence into the Leadville aquifer. There are two more rock types that bear mentioning because of their historic connection with geothermal processes. They are: 1. Travertines of Recent age found in the Colorado River bed, along its banks in the vicinity of thermal springs and seeps, and as an erosion-resistant bench about 200 feet above the north side of the Colorado River. The travertines are deposits that comprise calcium- cemented sands, gravels, and some boulders. The calcium precipitates from calcium- saturated, relatively low temperature thermal waters and then solidifies to bind the sediments that are in contact with the thermal waters. As the sediments seal in one location, the thermal waters find new paths to follow, break out to the ground surface, and continue the sealing process. 2. Basalts, extrusive igneous volcanic lava flows, outcrop all around the Glenwood Springs region. They are relatively young (Pleistocene age) and are products of molten magma that once rose to the surface. At one time these magmas might have constituted a heat source for the Leadville Limestone waters, however, it is generally believed that these magmas are now too cool to be of contemporary geothermal importance. Geologic Structure There are two types of geologic structures that play important roles in the geothermal scenario around Glenwood Springs. These are: 1) the domal deformation known as the White River Uplift (see figure 3) (from Kirkham et.al.) and 2) the several faults that transect the column of geologic formations. The White River Uplift is located north and slightly northeast of Glenwood Springs. It is an asymmetric dome that was created by upward pressure exerted by deep-seated magmas in the Laramide age mountain building period. When the uplift occurred, older geologic formations including the Eagle Valley evaporites, the Belden shale and the Leadville Limestone were draped over the dome so that to the north, northwest, southwest, and south of the City these sediments all dip approximately 18-25 degrees to the southwest. (See Figures 1, 3, and 4 (From Bishop- Brogdan, 1994)). On Figure 4, the White River Uplift is to the right (northeast) and the southwesterly dip of the geothermally important sediments (Eagle Valley evaporites, Belden formation, and the Leadville Limestone is diagrammatically illustrated. The existence of a very thick sequence of sulfate and salt – rich Eagle Valley evaporites underlying the highlands to the southwest of the Colorado River can also be clearly seen. 15
