Between 1881 and 1883, two buildings enclosing “Vapor Caves” in the Leadville Limestone outcrop on the south side of the Colorado River were constructed and used for medicinal and healing purposes. Those facilities were destroyed when the railroad was built, and in 1887 a 122 - 125oF Vapor Cave facility was built on the north bank of the river, just east of the pool, where it is currently used for the same purposes as the old ones. At the site of Graves Hot Springs, about 4,400 feet west of Yampah Springs, also on the north bank of the Colorado River, a second small spa was built. That facility was quite small, infrequently used, and eventually abandoned. The spa site and the surrounding land have been stripped of trees, covered with fill dirt, and are currently for sale. Finally, at many of the thermal seeps along both the north and the south banks of the Colorado River, circular soaking pools have been built using river rocks. These informal structures are constructed so as to allow mixing of cold river water with the hot spring flows in such proportions as to yield ideal bathing temperatures of 102-106oF.
