POTENTIAL USES OF THE GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE INTRODUCTION The use of a geothermal resource depends on a number of parameters, all of which must be considered in developing a project. These include: • Temperature • Flow rate • Chemistry • Access to the resource • Ownership of the resource • Distance to a potential user • Market for the energy • Economics • Environmental limitations • Political/governmental/social barriers Based on the geologic information discussed earlier in this report, the following information pertaining to the geothermal resource will be utilized in the discussion of potential uses: • The resource as currently known, has a temperature between 80 and 126oF, with an average of 122oF used in this study; • Based on geochemistry, a deeper resource may exist and may have a temperature between 140 and 180oF; • The chemistry of the resource has a pH of 6.3 (slightly acidic) to 8.3 (moderately basic), and total dissolved solids of 22,200 mg/L (ppm), primarily chloride, sodium and sulfates; • Much of the thermal water flows under artesian conditions; and • The available Btu/hr content of the various springs and seeps ranges from 360,000 Btu/hr to that of the large Yampah Spring at 97,200,000 Btu/hr. The following potential uses of the geothermal resource along with the related costs are addressed: 1. Electric power generation 2. Space heating 3. District heating 4. District heating by pumping and injecting the water 5. Direct-use with downhole heat exchangers 6. Using various waste water sources 7.
