A binary cycle system has been used at Chena Hot Springs, Alaska where the geothermal resource is only 165oF. However, they have available a very low temperature cooling resource, 40oF stream water, thus producing a “delta T or ΔT” (temperature difference between the entering and leaving geothermal fluid) of 30oF, which helped improve the efficiency. In addition, they were replacing diesel powered electricity priced at around 25¢/kWh – as the resort was not on the electrical grid. Similarly, Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) is installing a binary cycle unit using 195oF geothermal fluid and 70oF cooling water, which also produces a maximum delta T of 30oF. However, at OIT, the power rate is much less than at Chena, therefore the benefits are not as great. The saving grace at OIT is that the unit will also become a teaching tool for students and a demonstration site for potential developers and users. In either case the efficiency of the units is only around 6% (i.e. the unit only converts the geothermal energy input to around 6% in electricity output). In both cases (Chena at 250 kW gross and OIT at 280 kW gross), about 600 gpm of geothermal fluid and 1,500 gpm of cooling water are used to produce from 150 to 200kW net electricity, depending upon the various parasitic loads and the outside air temperature (Chena is more efficient due to colder outside air temperatures).
