Heat loads for various building types are estimated from the attached graph (Figure 10) for single storied buildings (www.retscreen.net). At an outside design temperature of -2oF for the winter (Robin Millyard, Public Works Director, Glenwood Springs, personal communication, July 09), and insulation quality of the buildings in Glenwood Springs estimated at “Medium”, the design heating energy requirement would be 21.0 Btu/hr/ft2. For two storied buildings where there is some heat transfer between floors, the estimated heating requirement is 30 Btu/hr/ft2, and for three-storied buildings at 40 Btu/hr/ft2 based on the surface footprint. If a mix of buildings is present in the area, an average design value of 35 Btu/hr/ft2 is used. Figure 10. Design heating loads. 3. District Heating District heating is defined as the heating of two or more structures from a central source. Heat may be provided in the form of either steam or hot water and may be utilized to meet process, space or hot water requirements. The heat is distributed through a network of insulated pipes consisting of delivery and return mains. This is illustrated in Figure 11.
